Love of Abraham Lincoln Made Manifest in Cake

Just a quick note about my love affair with Abraham Lincoln. You may have noticed his face peering out at you from the banner at the top of my blog* and wondered what it has to do with cooking or baking. Well, it is actually a cake.

A few years ago I wanted to make a cake to commemorate Abe’s birthday, and this was the practice cake from the week before. It was Super Bowl Sunday and I decided to surprise my dad with it. I cut and decorated it while he wasn’t around, then covered the cake in foil and let him unwrap it. I’ll never forget the crazy look on his face when he saw the cake and yelled, “It looks like Abraham Lincoln! Why does the cake look like Abraham Lincoln?!”

It’s two layers, with the top layer cut out in the shape of his head, and the image and likeness of his beautiful face “painted” on in chocolate and vanilla frosting.

It was kind of sad to eat him, but I think he would have wanted it that way.

I have been in love with Abe for many years now, that’s why I use this picture (of me wearing my favorite shirt while holding my favorite mug) as my avatar.**

Not everyone thinks he was a great president. He didn’t really free the slaves, they say. He should have let the South secede from the Union, they say. What is it you like so much about him, anyway? They ask. Well…I love his beard, his sunken eyes and his long, lanky arms! I love his melancholy, and the fact that he kept his bank book under his hat. I love that he was a terrible dancer. The list goes on.

I can’t wait to see the new movie, Linoln, based in part on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s biography “Team of Rivals”. It’s excellent book, although it is VERY long. Totally worth it! Will anyone else be seeing this movie???

*Well, I changed the theme and banner on my blog now, but I do still love him dearly.
**I also changed my avatar. But still love him.

  1. I might watch the movie! And I’d love to borrow the painting you posted of Lincoln to hang in my office. How ’bout it? Or you could just paint another one!
