beheading of St. John the Baptist

As a friendly reminder, reposting this from last year:

Beheading of St. John the Baptist.

“Today (August 29) we commemorate the Beheading of St. John the Baptist. It is considered a strict fast day, and some people will not eat (or drink!) anything the entire day. Another interesting custom I learned about only just recently, many people will not eat anything on a plate since St. John’s head was served on a platter. I also read some people do not eat anything “head-like” today, such as a head of cabbage or lettuce. Yet another custom is to not cut anything on this day, so veggies that need to be cut for a meal are cut the night before.”
