Yes, I went to Marie Catrib’s twice in one week and I am slowly but surely making my way through the vegan items in the deli. Not only did I try the vegan Larry David lasagna, I also had the Lebanese potato salad and TWO kinds of cake!!!
The deli is REALLY growing on me. I love checking everything out while I’m waiting for my table…hey, I wonder if they do that on purpose…..
Anyway. We started with the Lebanese potato salad, which at first glance appeared to be similar to the Syrian potato salad Tete makes, and also similar to what I had in Greece. However…
There is a ton of garlic, along with the parsley and chives. Personally, I thought it was great. My dinner guests, though, are not fans of garlic or anything Middle Eastern that isn’t The Way My Mom Makes It. So guess who got to eat all the potato salad herself? I didn’t complain. I also didn’t taste any lemon or much salt. I’m not sure if this is the true Lebanese way to make it, or Marie’s way. I don’t care. I like it.
I wouldn’t mind eating the lasagna cold, straight from the deli case, but they heat it for you. Just don’t expect it to look pretty, but it will be steamin’ hot.
It has a delicious tomato sauce, spinach, and tofu instead of cheese.
The faux meat inside is, apparently, the same house-made mixture used for the Larry David sandwich. Oh, and that just happens to be, apparently, what they use for Vegan Hotdog Day. Versatile stuff.
Onto dessert. Unfortunately they were all out of the Crunchy Peanut cake I was hoping for, so I made up for it…by getting both my 2nd and 3rd choice desserts.
Behold: The vegan hummingbird cake.
Loaded with banana and pineapple with a hint of cinnamon, it actually tastes a lot like banana bread. I love the coconut in the thick frosting.
The black & white cupcake.
Just like is sounds (and looks), this is a yummy extra dark chocolate cupcake with vanilla frosting. The cake seemed to have a faint hint of mint.
Both cakes were super moist and dense and packed with flavor, not like the fluffy stuff you get from, say, a grocery store bakery or as the result of a typical boxed cake mix. This is good stuff.
What is your favorite item from Marie’s deli?
