Feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ

Transfiguration of Christ

On the mount Thou wast transfigured, and Thy disciples, as much as they could bear, beheld Thy glory, O Christ our God; that when they should see Thee crucified, they would know Thy Passion to be willing, and would preach to the world that Thou, in truth, art the Effulgence of the Father.

Arise, ye sluggards, wallow not for ever on the ground; ye thoughts, which bend my soul toward the earth, bestir yourselves, and mount up to the height of divine ascent. Let us run with Peter and the sons of Zebedee, and let us go with them to Mount Tabor, that with them we may see the glory of our God and hear His voice; for when they had heard it from on high, they preached the Effulgence of the Father.

On the sixth of this month we commemorate the divine Transfiguration of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ.

Tabor was glorified above earth’s every region
When it looked upon God’s nature shining in glory.
On the sixth Christ transformed His form as a man.

  1. I was reading in the Orthodox Study Bible this morning several of the references in the Bible about the Transfiguration and came across this note about Ecclesiastes 8:1-5 on p877. Christ’s “face shone like the sun” on Mount Tabor (Mathew 17:2). The faithful also shine with His ineffable light, as Christ Himself said, “You are the light of the world” (Mathew 5:14). Therefore, let us work to acquire the wisdom that is Christ our king, that we might shine as lights “in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation” (Philippians 2:15).

And another note about “… the clouds are the dust of His feet.” in Nahum 1:3-5, Clouds symbolize the Holy Spirit. A cloud was at Christ’s feet at His Transfiguration (Luke 9:34); and He Himself says He will come again in a cloud (Luke 21:27). They will see Him in a cloud coming with power and great glory.

Today we celebrate His Transfiguration and His death that He spoke to Moses and Elijah about that frees us from sin and saves us eternally!
